Lake Restoration finished applying 87,000 gallons of alum (aluminum sulfate) to Big Swan Lake on Tuesday. This photo was taken Monday as the final push began. The process took about two weeks while contending with several overly windy days that delayed applications. The GPS-guided treatments will be repeated early next spring or late fall.
The goal of the overall project, headed by Lee Daly of the Big Swan Lake Improvement District (LID), is to tie up phosphorus in the water and built up on the lake bottom to limit algae growth and create better water quality. Contributing to the efforts of Lee and his LID committee were the lake association, Todd County Soil and Water, local DNR offices and other partners seeking improved Big Swan water quality. One of the major funding sources is a Minnesota Clean Water grant.
